Today the talk is not at the usual time but instead between 11:30 and
12:30. The speakers are Detlef Nauck and Vidhyalakshmi Karthikeyan from BT.
Self-learning processes and predictive network management
Running BT’s network requires coordinating a large number of processes
to deliver and maintain services. In BT Research we are looking at how
we can make these processes as autonomous as possible. In order to do
this, it is necessary to be able to predict process problems or automate
network management and pre-empt customer affecting issues before they
occur. In our research team we are applying different types of machine
learning methods to discover patterns in data that can help us to
pre-empt service issues or support decision making. We will present a
number of projects to illustrate this research.
Detlef Nauck – Short Biography
Professor Dr. Detlef Nauck is a Chief Research Scientist with BT's
Research and Technology Division located at Adastral Park, Ipswich, UK.
He is leading a group of international scientists working on Business
Intelligence, Intelligent Data Analysis and Computational Intelligence.
He is a Visiting Professor at Bournemouth University and a Private
Docent at the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg, Germany. Detlef
holds a Masters degree in Computer Science (1990) and a PhD in Computer
Science (1994) both from the University of Braunschweig, Germany. He
also holds a Habilitation (post-doctoral degree) in Computer Science
from the Otto-von-Guericke University of Magdeburg (2000).
Detlef is an internationally renowned scientist in Computational
Intelligence and Intelligent Data Analysis and has published eight books
and more than 110 papers. He has won two BCS medals and he is an
inventor on 12 patent applications.
Detlef’s current research focuses on deriving intelligence from vast
amounts of data and applying predictive analytics in different areas of
business intelligence to support decision making and the automation of
business processes.
Vidhyalakshmi Karthikeyan
Vidhyalakshmi Karthikeyan has graduated with a Distinction from UCL in
2009 with an MSc in Telecommunications, preceding which she completed
her BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the same
university. Vidhya joined BT’s graduate programme in 2009 and is now
working in BT’s Research and Technology Division. She runs a research
project on autonomous network management systems and is an inventor on 4
patent applications.
