Quality-driven wireless multimedia<br>
<br>
Audiovisual systems are becoming more and more complex and new
possibilities of presenting content are available, including
augmented reality and immersive environments. In this framework,
user requirements are not limited anymore to requirements on
connectivity, but users expect services to be delivered according to
their quality demands. However, for wireless systems the possible
limitations due to the characteristics of the transmission channel
and of the devices can result in perceivable impairments, originated
in the different steps of the value chain from content production to
display techniques, that influence the user’s perception of quality.

In recent years, the new concept of quality of experience (QoE) has
been defined, where the QoE concept differs from quality of service
(QoS) in that more than on the performance of the network, the
focus is on the overall experience of the consumer accessing and
using the provided services. Objective, rather than subjective, QoE
evaluation enables user centric design of novel multimedia systems,
through an optimal use of the available resources based on such
objective utility index.<br>
The seminar will focus on the need for objective evaluation of video
quality and quality of experience for an effective design of
wireless multimedia systems. Quality metrics recently developed by
the author together with the members of the Wireless Multimedia
Networking research group in Kingston University will be presented,
together with some examples of their usage in a cross-layer,
QoE-driven system design, such as in the recent OPTIMIX and CONCERTO
EU projects.<br>

Maria G. Martini is a Reader (Assoc. Prof.) in the Faculty of
Science, Engineering and Computing in Kingston University, London,
where she also leads the Wireless Multimedia Networking Research
Group.<br>
She received the Laurea in electronic engineering (summa cum laude)
from the University of Perugia (Italy) in 1998 and the Ph.D. in
Electronics and Computer Science from the University of Bologna
(Italy) in 2002.<br>
She is has led the KU team in a number of national and
international projects, funded by the European Commission, UK
research councils and international industries.<br>
An IEEE Senior Member, she is a (guest) editor and reviewer for
international journals and she has been in the organising and
programme committee of several international conferences. She has
recently served as lead guest editor for the IEEE JSAC special
issue on QoE-aware wireless multimedia systems, for the Int.
Journal on Telemedicine and Applications, and for the JCNC special
issue on Improving QoS and QoE for Mobile Communications. She was
general chair of the ICST/ACM MOBIMEDIA 2009 conference and of EUMOB
2008. She has organised the IEEE Workshop on Streaming and Media
Communications (ICME 2011) and the First International Workshop on
Cross-Layer Operation Aided Multimedia Streaming (IEEE VTC 2011).
She coordinated (2008-2010) the edition of the Strategic
Applications Agenda (SAA) on mobile health and inclusion
applications in the eMobility European Technology Platform. She is
part of international committees and expert groups, including the
IEEE Multimedia Communications technical committee (key member
2010-2012 for QoE and multimedia streaming) and the Net!Works
European Technology Platform expert group.<br>
Her research interests include wireless multimedia networks,
cross-layer design, joint source and<br>
channel coding, 2D/3D error resilient video, 2D/3D video quality
assessment, and medical<br>
applications. She is the author of over 80 international scientific
articles and book chapters, and the inventor of several patents on
wireless video.<br>
