*Seminar on **Mobile**Ad-hoc NETworks (MANET) - Thursday, 25 October -
1:00-2:00 pm - MPEB 1.02*

*Prof. Andreas Polydoros*
National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

*Title:* Research challenges in highly-dynamic MANET systems for
real-time applications

*Abstract: *We discuss Mobile /Ad-hoc/ NETworks (MANET) under
challenging application requirements.
These arise in hostile environments where traditional network-design
principles do not apply. Such
scenarios may include broadcast voice and streaming data (video)
services in military deployments,
public-safety responder operations to emergencies, relief missions in
natural-disaster areas, and so on.
In all such cases, the point-to-point ground communication channels are
very brittle due to mobility,
obstacles, and the lack of a controlling infrastructure. The focus will
be on the main objectives and
constraints in designing the necessary networking and control mechanisms
for a MANET to achieve
the abovementioned targets. We will also present a simple, autonomous,
cooperative-transport solution
that offers a high degree of robustness via joint information relaying.

*Biography:* Andreas Polydoros is a Professor at the University of
Athens, Greece. He holds a Diploma
from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece (1977), a
Master's from the State University of
New York at Buffalo, NY (1979) and a Doctorate from the University of
Southern California (USC) (1982),
all in Electrical Engineering. Between the years 1982-1997 he was a
Faculty member in the Electrical
Engineering Department of USC, becoming a Professor in 1992. In 1997 he
returned to Greece as
Professor of Physics and Director (1997-2007) of the Electronics
Laboratory in Applied Physics.
Prof. Polydoros is a Fellow of the IEEE (1995) "for contributions to
spread-spectrum systems and networks",
inventor of the Per-Survivor-Processing (PSP) concept and an ISI
Highly-Cited researcher. He is also
Distinguished Adjust Professor at King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah,
Saudi Arabia (2011). He is a co-founder
of Trellisware Technologies in San Diego, CA, a company specializing in
wireless networking products. His
scientific interests are digital communication, spread-spectrum systems,
mobile radio, inference in uncertain
environments and, more recently, flexible- and cognitive-radio concepts.

Kindest regards,

Konstantinos
